Winter 2019-20 in Coventry

This has been our mildest winter (6.2C) since 2015/16 (6.7C), with only 5 winters warmer than this year since 1892:

6.7C2015-16

6.6C1973-74

6.5C1989-90, 2006-07

6.4C1988-89

6.2C2019-20

6.0C1997-98

5.9C1898-99, 2013-14, 2018-19

This past decade (2011-20) has seen winter temperatures on average 1.6C warmer than the last decade of the 19th century in Coventry.

Winter 2019-20 will be remembered as a wet season, though only February was very wet; with 267.2mm of rain, 61% above average, this was the wettest winter in Coventry since 2013-14 (310.6mm).

Only six winters have been wetter than this year since 1892, namely 1911-12, 1914-15, 1976-77, 1978-79, 1989-90 and 2013-14.

Thanks to a number of Clean Air Acts, sunshine levels have been on the increase for many decades; winter in Coventry has averaged 221.6hr of sunshine from 2011-2020, double that of a century ago.

However, with 211.5hr of sunshine (7% above average), winter 2019-20 has been the dullest winter in Coventry since 2016/17 (176.8hr), even though only 16 winters have recorded more sunshine since 1892.
