A review of the climate statistics for summer 2018

This has been the warmest Summer in Coventry (18.0C) since records were first kept in the city in 1892, equalling the mean temperature of 2006.

Here is a list of the warmest summers in Coventry in the past 126 years:

18.0C           2006, 2018

17.9C           1911,1995

17.8C           2003

17.6C           1893, 1933

17.4C           1947, 1976, 1983

Summer 2018 got under way early, with a warm May, the warmest May in Coventry since 1992 (14.3ºC); only 2 May months had been warmer than May 2018 since 1892 (1947 and 1992).

So, it is no surprise to find that the 4 month extended summer period from May to August 2018 has been the warmest on record (17.0C).

For the record, here is a list of the highest extended summer temperatures in Coventry since 1892:

2018          17.0C

1911          16.8C

2006          16.7C

1893 1947 16.6C

1995 2003  16.5C

So, Summer 2018 is most notable for its longevity, though not perhaps for its intensity. As you can see in this table, summer 1976 recorded 13 days with temperatures over 30C in Coventry, compared to just 2 in 2018.

It has been our driest summer in Coventry since 1995 (46.8mm).

Only 9 summers have been drier than Summer 2018 since 1870 (1911, 1913, 1942, 1949, 1959, 1975, 1976, 1994 and 1995).
